 How to uninstall pre-existing graphics card drivers from a Microsoft Windows based system

This article provides instructions on how to uninstall pre-existing ATI graphics card drivers in a Microsoft Windows based system.

Note! The following instructions only apply if the system has pre-existing graphics drivers and you are attempting to:

  • Resolve display issues, performance issues or error messages that occur after graphics card installation
  • Upgrade an old graphics card to a new model in an existing system
  • Upgrade an old driver to the latest version from AMD.COM

How to uninstall pre-existing drivers in a Windows 7 based system

  1. Click on Start
  2. Open the Control Panel
  3. Select Programs and Features
  4. Select ATI Catalyst Install Manager
  5. Click on Change



  6. Click on Next when prompted for the Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard for ATI Catalyst™ Install Manager



  7. Select Express Uninstall All ATI Software
  8. Follow the on-screen directions and restart the system when finished



  9. Note! The Windows User Account Control (UAC) will prompt for Do you want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this computer?. Click on Yes to continue with the uninstall process





  10. To verify that the legacy graphics driver has been uninstalled, return to the Uninstall or Change a Program list and ensure that there is no ATI specific software listed
  11. If ATI specific software is still listed, remove any remaining ATI software components using the above process and restart the system when complete

How to uninstall pre-existing drivers in a Windows Vista based system

  1. Click on Start
  2. Open the Control Panel
  3. Select Programs and Features
  4. Select ATI Catalyst Install Manager



     
  5. Click Change
  6. Choose Express Uninstall ALL ATI Software



  7. Follow the on-screen directions and restart the system when finished
  8. To verify that the legacy graphics driver has been uninstalled, return to the Uninstall or Change a Program list and ensure that there is no ATI specific software listed
  9. If ATI specific software is still listed, remove any remaining ATI software components using the above process and restart the system when complete

How to uninstall pre-existing drivers in a Windows XP / Windows 2000 based system

  1. Click on Start
  2. Open the Control Panel
  3. Select Add or Remove Programs
  4. From the list of Currently installed programs, select ATI - Software Uninstall Utility



    1. If ATI-Software Uninstall Utility is not listed in Add/Remove Programs, first remove ATI Catalyst Control Center then remove the ATI Display Drivers
    2. Click 'No' when prompted to restart the system
    3. Empty the Windows Temp folder by going to C:\Windows\Temp\
  5. Restart the system
