Error 183 – AMD Installer Cannot Continue Due to Third Party Graphics Drivers Installed

This article provides information about the Error 183 encountered when installing AMD graphics drivers on a system which already has third party graphics drivers installed.

Possible Cause

This error may occur if the AMD Installer detects that third party graphics drivers are installed on the system.​

Solution

​If the third party graphics hardware is physically installed in your system.
  1. Right click on the Windows icon at the bottom left of the screen and select "Programs and Features".
  2. From the list of installed programs displayed, scroll till you find the entry for the software for your existing 3rd party graphics card. If, for example, you have an Nvidia product, it will appear with the words "Nvidia" or "Geforce". Right click on this item and select Uninstall. Follow the prompts to completely uninstall the driver. Repeat this all the entries relating this product that appear in the "Programs and Features" list are removed.
  3. Once completed, shut down your computer and physically remove the old graphics card (please remember to take the required steps to properly ground yourself before performing this step).
  4. Insert the AMD graphics card into the appropriate slot and attach the power connectors to the graphics card, if needed.
  5. Restart the computer and proceed to install the AMD graphics drives.
​​If you have already physically removed the third party graphics card.
  1. Right click on the Windows icon at the bottom left of the screen and select "Programs and Features".
  2. From the list of installed programs displayed, scroll till you find the entry for your existing non-AMD graphics card. If, for example, you have an Nvidia product, it will appear with the words "Nvidia" or "Geforce". Right click on this item and select Uninstall. Follow the prompts to completely uninstall the driver. Repeat this all the entries relating this product that appear in the "Programs and Features" list.
  3. Once completed, restart the computer.
  4. If required, insert the AMD graphics card into the appropriate slot and attach the power connectors to the graphics card, if needed.
  5. Restart the computer and proceed to install the AMD graphics drives.

If you are still unable to resolve Error 183 after completing the steps outlined above and need further assistance, please contact AMD Customer Care and attach the AMD Installer log file to your service request.  The AMD Installer log file is located in C:\Program Files\AMD\CIM\Log\Installer.log​
