This article provides recommendations for resolving system audio issues that may have occurred after the installation of an ATI Radeon™ Graphics card

Issue Description:
The user installs an ATI Radeon HD graphics card (AGP or PCIe®), installs the ATI Catalyst software, reboots the system and at system startup, the system speakers produce no sound from the onboard audio device. The onboard audio device may be missing from the device manager or the default audio playback device is not selectable or grayed out in the Windows Sound options.

Cause:
All ATI Radeon HD graphic cards have a built in audio chip. The issue can occur when there is an IRQ conflict between the motherboard’s onboard audio device and the ATI Radeon HD graphics card.  By default, a motherboard's BIOS is set up to auto detect any add-on audio chips. When the ATI Radeon HD graphics card was installed, the motherboard may have set it to have a higher priority than the onboard audio device, causing the operating system to configure the graphics card as the default audio device.

Recommendations:
The following recommendations may help resolve audio issues the system may be experiencing:

Ensure that the onboard audio is enabled in the motherboard’s BIOS

  • Refer to the motherboards manual or contact the manufacturer or system integrator for proper instructions on enabling the onboard audio within the BIOS

Set the onboard audio playback device as the default audio device in the Windows Sound properties

  1. If the onboard audio device is selectable in the Windows Sound Propterties, ensure that it is set as the default
    1. For Windows Vista® and Windows® 7:
      1. Open the Control Panel
      2. Click on Sound
      3. Under the Playback tab, left-click on the “Speakers” icon
      4. Select “Set Default” for the onboard audio device

    2. For Windows® XP:
      1. Open the Control Panel
      2. Click on Sounds and Audio Devices
      3. Click on the “Audio” tab, under the Default Device
      4. Select the onboard audio device as the default device

  2. If the onboard audio device is not selectable, reinstall the drivers for the onboard audio device
    1. Use the motherboard installation CD or download the drivers from the manufacturer’s or systems integrator’s website to reinstall the drivers for the onboard audio device
    2. Use the instructions in step 1 to set the onboard audio as the default playback device

Disable the ATI HDMI audio device in the motherboard’s BIOS

  • If an IRQ conflict exists, try disabling the ATI HDMI audio to resolve the issue
  • Refer to the motherboard's manual or contact the manufacturer or system integrator for proper instructions on disabling an audio device within the BIOS
