This article provides information on male connector and female connection types commonly found in cables, graphics cards, and display devices.

Overview:

Graphics cards and display devices are outfitted with female connections.  Cables with male connectors on both ends establish the link between the graphics cards and display devices.  The table below illustrates the male and female connections with a short description.

DisplayPort:
A digital connection replacing DVI and VGA, used for outputting video and audio.

 

 



Mini DisplayPort:
This is a miniaturized version of the DisplayPort.
 

 

HDMI:  HDMI is short for High-Definition Multimedia Interface. It is an all in one connection for outputting video and multi-channel audio.
 

 

DVI-I: DVI-I is short for Digital Video Interface – Integrated. This connection provides a digital and analog video signal. A VGA (analog) connection can be established using a DVI to VGA adapter.

 

 

DVI-D: DVI-D is short for Digital Video Interface – Digital.  This connection provides a digital video signal. A VGA (analog) connection CANNOT be established using a DVI to VGA adapter.
 

 



DMS-59:
This 59-pin connector provides two outputs (DVI or VGA) on a single connector.  
 

  VHDCI: VHDCI is short for Very High Density Cable Interconnect.  This 68-pin connector provides two or four outputs (DVI or VGA) on a single connector.  

VGA: VGA is short for Video Graphics Array.  This connector provides only analog video signals.
